This is a typical quote these days, he's in a didactic phase. When he's not sure about his facts he uses his most professorial tone. After reading all the nonfiction he gets from the library (marine life, dinosaurs & Arthurian legends are current interests) he is a bit of a walking encyclopedia these days. Sometimes it's difficult to sort truth from imaginative invention or wishful fantasy.
But in this case having a friendly cat makes all your linguistic dreams come true.
